How to Make a Timeline in PowerPoint With SmartArt

PowerPoint also offers a built-in function, called SmartArt, that makes adding timelines a breeze. SmartArt objects are configurable graphics that you set up in a point-and-click fashion.

To use a SmartArt graphic for a timeline:

  1. Go to Insert.

  2. Select SmartArt.

  3. In the dialog box that appears, browse for the SmartArt graphic type that best suits your need.

Items in the Process category are good options. For example, choose Basic Timeline or Vertical Chevron List to get started on your timeline.

I've done a comparison by editing the same file in DxO (version 11, I haven't upgraded to the DxO Labs version). RAW Power for iOS 2.0 supports iOS 11 and 12 and 'does not support iPhone 5s, 6, or 6 Plus, or iPad mini 3 or earlier.'

  4. Select OK to insert the SmartArt into your presentation.

  5. The SmartArt graphic appears on the slide along with a text pane where you'll edit the text. Add text to the objects by editing the bullets in the text pane. It works just like a regular list, press Tab and Shift+Tab to make an indent and outdent or press Enter to add a new bullet point.

  6. Continue to decorate your SmartArt by changing the colors, choosing a different style, and reordering elements.

PowerPoint Online doesn't contain as many SmartArt graphics formats as the desktop version of PowerPoint. The ones mentioned in this article are available.

  • Lots of promise, but after using it for a few minutes it started displaying 'Periods' as a single point on the timeline. Not ready for primetime but hoping it improves. By the way, it's not at all obvious how we should report bugs.

  • Destroys your information fairly often

  • Hope the writer can see this. The most missed feature is the font size change for the EVENT caption. Many fonts size can be changed but only the EVENT caption cannot, but EVENT is the most important one. Very strange logic.

  • The interface is very intuitive. I am finding the program easy to use and it has exactly the functions that I need. Still, it seems to need some work on stability. Whenever I return to it after a break, portions are unresponsive, for instance HELP ABOUT, on my otherwise very stable WIN7U system. This program/project shows great promise. Thank you.

  • Love the idea of this program. I use it to plot my novels and it works better for me than the old index card programs I used to use. The only thing I'd like to see implemented is the ability to change the font size in the timeline tags and comment boxes. I run my monitor at 1920x1080 and the text is quite small on the screen. I can change the font sizes for the timeline itself, but not the actual tags and comments. That would be great.
